Austrian household financial assets exceed 1 trillion euros

For the first time, Austrian households possess more than 1 trillion euros in financial assets, according to data released by the Austrian National Bank (OeNB). As of the second quarter of 2026, total financial assets reached 1,011 billion euros, representing a 7 percent increase compared to the previous year.

Savings deposits remain the largest component at 34 percent, followed by equity holdings in private companies or foundations and securities, both at 24 percent. Over the last decade, the share of securities and funds within household wealth has more than doubled.

OeNB Vice-Governor Edeltraud Stiftinger noted that while households have become wealthier in real terms over the past ten years, wealth distribution remains uneven. She highlighted that many individuals lack the capacity to save or invest. Additionally, while the savings rate was high at 9.7 percent in 2025, it is projected to decrease to 8.4 percent in 2026.
