Austrian justice ministry: only three pre‑trial detainees on ankle‑bracelet house arrest

The Austrian Justice Ministry reported that, as of 29 July, 408 people are serving electronically monitored house arrest. 405 are sentenced prisoners, while only three pre‑trial detainees (U‑Häftlinge) are placed under the same regime.

Currently 221 sentenced inmates use the “front‑door” variant, serving their full sentence at home with an ankle bracelet, and 184 use the “back‑door” variant, receiving a shortened term. Justice Minister Anna Sporrer (SPÖ) has repeatedly called for expanding the ankle‑bracelet programme to relieve overcrowded prisons, but its use for U‑Häftlinge remains minimal.
