Austrian Lipid Consensus 2026 issues new cholesterol guidelines

The newly released ‘Austrian Lipid Consensus 2026’ provides medical professionals with updated treatment recommendations for cholesterol and other blood lipids. Coordinators of the paper, including Florian Kronenberg of the Medical University of Innsbruck and Florian Höllerl, emphasize the importance of early detection of risk factors and more frequent preventive screenings.

Experts noted that cardiovascular diseases, rather than cancer, are the leading cause of death in Europe. In Austria, these diseases account for the deaths of 37 percent of women and 31 percent of men. The report highlights that women often receive less adequate therapy due to differences in how symptoms are perceived and how heart attacks manifest.

Medical professionals are also advocating for the guideline-compliant use of cholesterol-lowering medications. While lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise can improve levels by 10 to 15 percent, experts state this is often insufficient to reach individual therapy goals. They urged doctors to combat myths and misinformation regarding the safety and necessity of these medications.
