Austrian military chief outlines defense modernization and service reform

Harald Vodosek, the Chief of the General Staff of the Austrian Armed Forces, has outlined the military's requirements for addressing new threats. Key focus areas for the modernization of the Bundesheer include the planned extension of compulsory military service, the acquisition of new Eurofighter jets, drone defense capabilities, and the overall expansion of national defense.

Political negotiations regarding military service reform are expected to conclude within the current quarter. The proposed reform includes a significant increase in soldier pay, potentially raising monthly compensation from approximately 600 euros to 1,000 euros to improve recruitment and long-term personnel potential. While the reform is being treated as a package, discussions continue regarding the balance between compulsory military service and civil service, which may require a two-thirds majority in the National Council.
