Austria Ministry of Finance warns of phishing scams

The Austrian Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF) has issued a warning regarding a surge in fraudulent activities targeting citizens through phishing attempts. Scammers are impersonating the tax authority and the ministry using fake emails, SMS, and social media messages to steal personal and banking information.

One prominent scheme involves fraudulent messages regarding family allowance (Familienbeihilfe). These messages claim that personal data misuse has caused issues with benefit payouts, prompting recipients to click a link to ‘verify and secure’ their data. The link directs users to a counterfeit website designed to capture online banking credentials.

Other fraudulent messages claim citizens have unpaid tax debts, sometimes threatening seizure of property if specific amounts are not paid. Police in Carinthia also reported a specific case where a 24-year-old victim lost over 10,000 euros after being targeted by a phishing link purportedly from a health insurance provider. The BMF emphasizes that official notifications are only sent via digitally signed documents or physical mail, and they will never request passwords or credit card details via email.
