Austrian municipalities seek federal support for infrastructure
The Austrian Association of Municipalities is calling for increased federal support to stimulate economic growth through infrastructure and energy transition projects. President Johannes Pressl has proposed a 1 billion euro credit framework for 2027 and 2028, intended to fund municipal investments such as photovoltaic systems, water supply upgrades, and road repairs. Under this plan, municipalities would repay the capital, but the federal government would provide interest subsidies to lower the financial burden.
In Burgenland, local officials are warning of severe financial pressure due to declining revenue shares. Markus Ulram, president of the Burgenland Municipal Association, expressed concern that limited financial flexibility could prevent necessary investments and force increases in local fees and taxes. To mitigate this, ÖVP representatives are demanding 100 million euros in interest-free loans for municipalities to ensure long-term planning stability.
