Austrian musicians launch campaign for more local radio airplay
A coalition of Austrian musicians and music industry representatives has launched the '#OhneFrequenz' campaign to demand increased airplay for domestic music on radio stations, including major broadcasters like Ö3 and Kronehit.
Prominent artists such as Hubert von Goisern, Ina Regen, and Julian le Play are supporting the initiative. The group argues that increased radio visibility is crucial for the economic health of the Austrian music sector, directly impacting streaming numbers, concert attendance, and royalty revenues. They note that currently, more than 80 percent of radio royalties flow abroad.
The campaign aims to influence the upcoming ORF reform to ensure more support for local talent. Proponents point to Scandinavian countries, such as Norway and Denmark, as models where domestic music achieves significantly higher radio shares than the current voluntary 18 percent target set by Ö3.
