International Day to End Poverty prompts NGO calls for social reform
In observance of the International Day to End Poverty, various non-governmental organizations and local governments across Europe are launching campaigns and issuing policy demands to address social exclusion and economic hardship.
In Austria, NGOs including Caritas and Amnesty International have called on federal and state governments to protect the social safety net during upcoming welfare reforms. The Armutskonferenz warned against austerity measures that disproportionately affect the poor, stating that poverty is often a political outcome rather than an inevitability.
In Belgium, local initiatives are making poverty visible through symbolic actions. In Poperinge and Hamont-Achel, white knotted sheets are being displayed to represent the difficulties of escaping poverty. In Eupen, a light procession aims to break the silence surrounding economic hardship, while in Halle, the organization Open Armen is using an escape room to demonstrate the administrative and financial barriers people face when accessing healthcare.
In the Netherlands, the Landelijke Armoedecoalitie has petitioned the House of Representatives to prioritize debt combatting and structural investments in basic security. Meanwhile, local services in Weert are highlighting the importance of early administrative support to prevent financial instability.
