Austrian ORF faces leadership dispute amid ÖVP and FPÖ tensions

ÖVP party manager Nico Marchetti publicly said he would favour former APA chief Clemens Pig for the post of ORF general director. The remark was taken as political meddling, sparking criticism within the ÖVP and fears that the comment could be used in pending lawsuits over Pig’s appointment.

Siegfried Meryn, a TV doctor who sits on the ORF Foundation Council, announced his resignation from that body. In a letter he cited difficulties within the broadcaster’s top‑level decision‑making and called for reforms to strengthen ORF’s independence. Meryn’s departure followed a dispute with FPÖ‑appointed council member Peter Westenthaler after Meryn defended an ORF employee involved in a controversy over the programme “Licht in das Dunkel”. Both episodes have intensified debate over the governance and political influence on Austria’s public broadcaster.
