Austrian Parliament Debates Double Budget and €60 Million Municipal Funding Package

The Austrian National Council examined the government’s double budget for 2027‑28 presented by Finance Minister Markus Marterbauer (SPÖ). Opposition parties – the FPÖ, Greens, NEOS and others – accused the plan of relying on outdated forecasts, failing to reduce the deficit sufficiently, and shifting tax burdens onto families, pensioners and the super‑rich. They warned that wealth and inheritance taxes could still be introduced and that debt would continue to grow.

At the same time, coalition partners ÖVP and FPÖ proposed a €60 million package aimed at easing municipalities’ financial pressures. The measure has not yet been adopted; a final vote is expected in the July Landtag session. While the SPÖ criticises the proposal, it has signalled willingness to support it. The Greens, NEOS and MFG also denounced the package as inadequate, urging broader reforms and lower municipal levies.
