Austrian pensioner receives diversion after threatening official

A 68-year-old pensioner appeared before the Krems District Court after threatening a government official with violence. The incident occurred during a telephone call with the Lower Austrian Provincial Government's Department of Environmental and Plant Technology.

The man had requested an air quality measurement in Schiltern to address concerns regarding a neighbor's cannabis cultivation. When informed that the government would no longer provide such services for free and that he would need to hire a private company, the man threatened to shoot his neighbor. He later claimed the threat was merely a “joke” intended to pressure the official into making a commitment.

The judge noted that “times are changing, even in the countryside,” and granted the previously unblemished pensioner a diversion. The criminal proceedings have been suspended for a one-year probationary period; if no further offenses occur, the case will be dismissed.
