Austrian potato harvest expected to drop by over 40 percent

The Austrian potato harvest is facing a significant decline in 2026 due to extreme weather conditions. Current estimates project a yield of approximately 468,000 tons, a drop of more than 40 percent compared to the 813,300 tons recorded in 2025. This figure is also well below the annual average of roughly 700,000 tons reported by the Chamber of Agriculture.

Persistent drought and high temperatures since June have been the primary drivers of the shortage, particularly affecting the critical tuber formation phase. In regions like Styria, dry soil has led to smaller tubers and lower overall yields. Additionally, damage from wireworms has forced producers to sort out a portion of the harvest, further reducing the volume available for sale.

This decline follows a pattern of weather-related agricultural stress in the region, which has also impacted sugar beet and pumpkin oil production. In response to the crisis, the Interest Group for Potato Growers (IGE) is encouraging consumers and the food industry to accept smaller tubers, noting that strict optical sorting standards may exacerbate the shortage for processing uses like mashing or making dumplings. The economic pressure is significant, with a survey indicating that 40 percent of surveyed farms intend to reduce their potato cultivation areas.
