Austrian President Van der Bellen criticizes Israel at UN General Assembly

During a visit to New York for the 81st United Nations General Assembly, Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen issued sharp criticisms regarding Israel’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank. In a joint press conference with Prime Minister Christian Stocker and Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger, Van der Bellen characterized certain practices, specifically the forced displacement of Palestinians in the West Bank, as “violations of international law” and “war crimes.”

While condemning these actions, Van der Bellen emphasized that Israel’s right to exist is not open to debate. Foreign Minister Meinl-Reisinger supported the President’s stance, noting that while Austria stands by Israel, it is necessary to speak out when “red lines are crossed.”

In addition to the conflict, the Austrian delegation discussed global security, international cooperation, and the risks posed by artificial intelligence. Prime Minister Stocker also highlighted the importance of multilateralism through the EU, OSCE, and UN, noting Austria’s upcoming role as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2027 and 2028.
