Austrian presidential aspirant promises return of cultural artifacts

Günther Fehlinger-Jahn, an Austrian economist and activist campaigning for the 2028 Austrian presidency, has made several campaign promises regarding the restitution of cultural artifacts held in Austria.

Fehlinger-Jahn stated on social media that, if elected, he would work to return the Moctezuma headdress to Mexico. The artifact is currently housed in the Weltmuseum Wien in Vienna. While the proposal aims to address colonial-era tensions and strengthen bilateral relations, it faces significant technical hurdles. Experts have warned that the fragile materials of the headdress could be damaged by vibrations during transport, a concern that has led Austria to previously decline Mexican requests for its return.

Additionally, Fehlinger-Jahn pledged to seek the return of the helmet and sword of Skanderbeg to Krujë, Albania. These historical items are currently part of the collections at the Neue Burg complex in Vienna. These declarations are political campaign proposals and do not represent official decisions by the Austrian government or the museums involved.
