Austrian prisons face crisis as suicide rates hit yearly highs

Austrian Ombudsman Gaby Schwarz has raised alarms regarding the deteriorating conditions within the country's correctional facilities. According to data reported by the Ombudsman, the number of suicides in Austrian prisons between January 1 and August 26, 2026, has already matched the total recorded for the entire previous year. Specifically, 8 suicides and 33 suicide attempts were reported during this period.

Schwarz highlighted critical systemic failures, including severe staff shortages and inadequate medical care. She noted that at the Forensic-Therapeutic Center (FTZ) Garsten, there has been a lack of psychiatric specialists on-site during nights and weekends, with general practitioners only available twice a week.

The situation is further complicated by rising violence, including two murders in prisons within a two-week span. These developments have placed pressure on Justice Minister Anna Sporrer, as officials struggle with prison overcrowding and a lack of personnel to manage the increasing inmate population and mental health needs.
