Austrian rail infrastructure expands with Villach station upgrades and new Graz airport links
Major infrastructure upgrades and service expansions are underway in southern Austria following the implementation of the Koralm Railway. In Villach, the main station has completed significant modernization works to accommodate increased rail traffic. These improvements include renewed and extended platforms, new platform roofs, modernized track and overhead line systems, and enhanced accessibility through new elevators and barrier-free access. The project also features expanded bike-and-ride facilities and a new eastern entrance to improve regional mobility.
In Graz, the ÖBB timetable starting December 13, 2026, will introduce the first rail connections to Graz-Feldkirchen Airport via the Koralm Railway. Two Interregio services are scheduled to serve the airport. While regional officials welcome the improved connectivity, airport management has noted that arrival times, particularly for morning services, may need adjustment to better accommodate passengers with checked luggage. The expansion aims to integrate the airport more effectively into the regional and international transport network.
