Austrian researchers develop quantum computer-powered microscope
A collaborative research group in Austria, including TU Wien, the University of Vienna, JKU Linz, and the University of Innsbruck, is developing a novel electron microscope powered by a quantum computer. The experimental system aims to bridge standard electron microscopy with built-in ion traps to extract deeper quantum information from individual electrons.
Conventional electron microscopy provides atomic-scale resolution but requires a high volume of electrons, which can damage sensitive specimens like biological proteins. By leveraging quantum entanglement, the researchers intend to link incoming microscope electrons to a quantum processor. This approach seeks to extract more data from a smaller particle count, allowing for high-clarity imaging while reducing the total electron load exposed to fragile samples.
