Germany economic growth forecasts raised as real estate markets show mixed trends
Leading German economic research institutes have significantly raised their GDP growth forecasts for 2026 to 1.3 percent, up from a previous estimate of 0.6 percent. This upward revision is attributed to robust exports, a global boom in artificial intelligence, and expansive government spending on infrastructure and defense. However, experts warn that this recovery rests on a fragile foundation due to high energy prices and structural issues. Growth is expected to reach 1.1 percent in 2027 before slowing to 0.4 percent in 2028.
In the labor market, the IAB predicts a decline in employment, forecasting a loss of 210,000 jobs in 2026 and an additional 140,000 in 2027, despite the economic growth.
Regarding real estate, German residential property prices rose by an average of 0.6 percent in the second quarter of 2026 compared to the previous year. While overall prices increased, condominium prices in the seven largest metropolitan areas saw a slight decrease of 0.4 percent. In Austria, residential real estate purchase prices rose by 3.9 percent in the first half of the year, reaching their highest level since 2010. Analysis shows significant savings for buyers looking outside of Vienna, with potential price advantages of up to 280,000 euros.
