Austrian schools to receive increased autonomy and funding

In Austria, the upcoming school year introduces new measures aimed at increasing school autonomy. Under new regulations, individual school locations will receive greater freedom regarding personnel deployment and German language promotion. Additionally, 400 schools facing specific challenges will receive a ‘chance bonus’—extra funds that can be used at the discretion of the local administration.

The Ministry of Education is also launching a platform to increase transparency by making school data comparable across institutions, though absolute performance values will remain private. While the shift toward autonomy is viewed positively, concerns have been raised regarding the introduction of ‘middle management’ and the lack of systematic, regular evaluation and continuous professional development for teachers.
