Self-checkout adoption rises in Austria, driven by Gen Z
A study conducted by the Handelsverband indicates that 47% of the Austrian population uses self-checkout kiosks, with adoption rates varying significantly by age. Generation Z (ages 18–29) leads this trend at 82%, followed by Millennials at 67%, while usage drops to 20% among Baby Boomers.
The grocery sector sees the highest adoption, with over half of consumers using self-checkout either frequently or occasionally. While 36% of users cite time savings as a primary benefit, 36% express concerns regarding the impact on jobs. Despite the rise of automation, 76% of respondents desire the continued option to choose between self-service and staffed counters.
Separately, financial data shows that 31% of Austrians invest in securities, but the country lacks the tax incentives for long-term capital gains found in many other EU nations. Officials have noted that Austria currently offers fewer incentives for private wealth accumulation through stocks compared to its European neighbors.
