Austrian states advance renewable energy targets and solar expansion

The Austrian state of Tirol reported that in 2024 renewable sources supplied 60 % of its total final energy consumption, far exceeding the national average of 43 %. Its Climate Strategy aims to raise electricity’s share of final energy use from 24 % to 47 % and increase bio‑energy to cover about 18 % of demand by 2050. The region also highlighted high building‑sector emissions, driven by oil heating and extensive natural‑gas use in tourism‑heavy municipalities.

In neighboring Styria, authorities plan to accelerate photovoltaic development by redesignating most of the existing 36 priority zones as “fast‑track” areas, simplifying permits. The goal is to reach roughly 3,300 MW of solar capacity by 2030, up from the current 1,700 MW. Industry groups warn that many designated sites lack grid connection or suitable sunlight, and call for a full revision of the zones to ensure effective expansion.
