Austrian states expand commuter subsidies for travelers

The Austrian states of Upper Austria and Carinthia are implementing or extending financial support for commuters to offset travel costs.

In Upper Austria, the state government is expanding the long-distance commuter allowance (Fernpendelbeihilfe). Starting November 1, the annual taxable income threshold for eligibility will increase from 35,000 to 38,000 euros. To qualify, individuals must travel at least 25 km between their primary residence and workplace. The subsidy, which ranges from 229 to 442 euros per year, applies to both car and public transport users. Additionally, previously rejected applications will be re-evaluated.

In Carinthia, commuters have until October 31 to apply for travel cost reimbursements for the previous year. The program offers partial or full refunds for the ‘Kärnten Ticket’ based on income, frequency of travel, and distance. Those earning less than 30,000 euros annually who commute at least 30 km on four or more days per week may be eligible for a full refund. Carinthia also provides a one-time 75-euro fuel bonus for car drivers who can demonstrate that public transport is not a reasonable alternative for commutes of at least 30 km.
