Austrian states report improved budget figures and debt reduction

Austrian states have reported improved fiscal performance in the first half of 2026. While the states recorded a total deficit of 1.177 billion euros, this figure is approximately two billion euros lower than the same period in the previous year. Significant improvements were noted in Vienna, Lower Austria, and Tyrol.

In Burgenland, Governor Hans Peter Doskozil is continuing a debt reduction strategy. Following a 50 million euro repayment in June, the state is set to repay an additional 57.2 million euro loan this month. This brings the total debt reduction to over 107 million euros within a few months. This consolidation is being funded largely through the sale of housing loans, which have already generated approximately 250 million euros in returns during the first phase.
