Austrian study compares surgical treatments for proximal humeral fractures

A multicenter retrospective study has analyzed surgical interventions for patients with metadiaphyseal proximal humeral fractures. These fractures represent approximately five percent of all fractures and are common among geriatric populations, often serving as indicators for osteoporosis.

Because metadiaphyseal fractures are difficult to categorize using standard classification systems and carry high complication rates, the study utilized an alternative classification system proposed by Stedtfeld et al. The research involved a data analysis of 294 patients across several institutions, including Klinik Donaustadt, the Medical University of Vienna, and the Wels-Grießkirchen Hospital. The study aims to address the lack of a defined gold standard in therapy, specifically regarding the choice between nail and plate osteosynthesis.
