Austrian teachers criticize new secondary school curricula rollout

Teachers in Austria are criticizing the implementation of new secondary school (AHS) curricula scheduled for next autumn. Georg Stockinger, a representative for the AHS teachers' union, has described the Ministry of Education's preparations as “highly unprofessional.”

The new curricula include the introduction of a “Democracy and Media” subject and an expansion of AI-related instruction within the informatics curriculum. However, critics argue that the transition is no longer “seriously implementable” due to the short notice and the lack of finalized curricula. Schools are required to decide by February whether to offer “Democracy and Media” as a standalone subject or integrate it into existing courses like history, yet the official curriculum remains unavailable.

Concerns have also been raised regarding teacher training at pedagogical universities, which has already commenced despite the absence of finalized content regulations. The reform represents a paradigm shift across all subjects, as the new curricula are significantly more detailed.
