Austrian-Turkish citizen killed by Turkish police in Istanbul

An Austrian-Turkish dual citizen, identified as 20-year-old Berkan C., was shot and killed by Turkish police during an operation in Istanbul on September 3, 2026. The incident occurred near a bus station in the Sultanbeyli district. Turkish authorities suspected the man of having links to the Islamic State (IS) and planning a terrorist attack within Turkey.

According to the Austrian Ministry of the Interior, security services had been monitoring the individual since 2025 due to his radicalization and intent to join IS. Despite being convicted in May 2026 for membership in a criminal and terrorist organization and participating in a DERAD deradicalization program, he reportedly continued his plans. He was arrested in March 2026 for attempting to acquire weapons despite a ban, and subsequently released under conditions that included regular reporting to security services. He traveled to Turkey in July 2026, violating his release terms. During the Istanbul operation, the suspect allegedly opened fire on police officers, leading to the fatal exchange of gunfire.
