Austrian ÖVP officials correct FPÖ claims on drought relief and energy

Members of the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) have issued corrections to claims made by the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) regarding drought relief and energy security.

Josef Moosbrugger, President of the Chamber of Agriculture, clarified that drought relief for farmers is funded by the federal budget through temporary reductions in federal subsidies for agricultural social insurance. This contradicts claims that farmers themselves are paying for the relief. He noted that the total package involves reducing federal subsidies by 50 million euros annually over a five-year period.

Additionally, ÖVP energy spokesperson Laurenz Pöttinger addressed concerns regarding Austria's electricity supply. Responding to FPÖ statements suggesting a dependency on foreign energy due to low hydropower levels in July, Pöttinger described the claims as “party-political panic-mongering.” He emphasized that Austria maintains one of Europe's most reliable electricity supplies through domestic production, grid capacity, and storage, noting that power flows naturally fluctuate within the European market.
