Austrian winegrowers face lower yields due to heat

Winegrowers in the Austrian regions of Burgenland and Upper Austria are beginning their harvests amidst challenging weather conditions. In Burgenland, heat and drought have led to an expected 30 percent decrease in harvest volume compared to the previous year, according to Herbert Oschep, chairman of Wein Burgenland. Despite the lower quantities, the quality of the vintage is described as satisfactory.

In Upper Austria, winemakers are also anticipating lower yields due to dryness and smaller grape sizes, though they expect high quality. Leo Gmeiner, president of the Upper Austrian Winegrowing Association, noted that the heat may benefit the vines, as they are deep-rooted and can access groundwater. Additionally, the high temperatures have helped prevent issues with mildew, a common pest.

The wine market remains difficult, with Herbert Oschep noting that global production currently exceeds consumption and demand is not as high as in previous years.
