Austria’s Airlines and Danube Shipping Hit by Middle East Crisis and Extreme Heat

Austrian Airlines is experiencing a sharp decline in passenger numbers and revenue, as well as higher fuel and security costs, because of the ongoing crisis in the Middle East. The carrier, a major European airline, is seeking to optimise routes and improve operational efficiency to mitigate the financial strain.

At the same time, Austria’s Ministry of Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure reports that the Danube River’s water level is about 60 cm below the long‑term low, a result of an early‑season heatwave that set a new temperature record of 40.2 °C in Vienna. The low water has virtually halted cargo shipments along the Danube and severely limited cruise traffic, forcing cargo vessels to reduce loads and shift freight to rail and road. Dredging operations continue in cooperation with inland waterway operator Viadonau to keep navigation possible.
