Austria's ASFINAG to make road vignette fully digital in 2027, offering free passes for disabled drivers

The Austrian motorway operator ASFINAG will phase out paper stickers and make the road vignette exclusively digital from 2027, linking each purchase to the vehicle’s licence plate. The change aims to streamline payment and verification processes.

People holding an Austrian disability pass that includes the note “Unzumutbarkeit der Benutzung öffentlicher Verkehrsmittel” will receive a free digital annual vignette and, where eligible, free digital multi‑use tunnel cards for the Bosruck‑, Gleinalmtunnel (A 9), Tauern‑ and Katschbergtunnel (A 10), Brenner‑Autobahn (A 13) and Arlbergtunnel (S 16). Eligibility requires exemption from the motor‑related insurance tax, Austrian residence or a vehicle registered to the entitled person, and the appropriate disability documentation. Applicants must first contact their motor‑vehicle insurer; no separate request to ASFINAG is required. owners of foreign‑registered cars can also qualify if they meet the same criteria, after providing proof to ASFINAG.
