Austria's coalition approves €55 million media funding package

Austria's governing coalition of the SPÖ, ÖVP and NEOS has reached an agreement on a new media funding programme worth more than €55 million. The package, to be presented by media minister Andreas Babler, includes a €25 million yearly newspaper‑delivery subsidy starting in 2027, €20 million per year for digital‑transformation support in 2026 and 2027, and €10 million for media‑competence and youth‑oriented journalism initiatives. In total, annual disbursements are expected to rise to around €110 million.

The reforms aim to consolidate the fragmented existing system, shift funding criteria toward journalistic quality, and create an independent commission to assess eligibility. While the government argues the measures will strengthen independent quality journalism and improve media literacy, critics warn that increased state financing could endanger editorial independence.

Details of the package will be outlined in a press conference on Monday, with Babler emphasizing the goal of safeguarding Austria’s media landscape against digital pressures and financial distress.
