Austria's defence lobby urges government to adopt conscription model

The umbrella organisation Plattform Wehrhaftes Österreich, representing Austria's defence clubs, called on the governing SPÖ and NEOS parties to end their hesitation on reinstating compulsory military service. Chair of the Defence Service Commission Erwin Hameseder warned that the changing geopolitical threat landscape in Europe “does not allow any further postponement” and urged a swift decision on the “Austria Plus” model, which restores a three‑phase training system. The group warned that a lack of parliamentary agreement could force a public referendum as a last resort.

Parallel calls came from the Austrian Red Cross, militia representatives and other civil‑society actors, who urged a longer basic and civil service period under an “8‑plus‑2” scheme. They argued that current security conditions mean “peaceful times are over” and that extended service is needed to achieve higher training standards, improve readiness and reduce long‑term costs. Both statements highlighted support from industry bodies and stressed the importance of preparedness for the population’s safety.
