Economic trends show rising sentiment in Austria and training shortages in Germany

Economic conditions in Austria and Germany show mixed signals. In Austria, the UniCredit Bank Austria economic indicator rose to -0.8 points in July, the highest level since geopolitical tensions involving Iran and the US impacted the Strait of Hormuz. Despite this slight improvement, pessimism remains high due to inflation risks and geopolitical instability. Austrian inflation is projected to average 3.2 percent, exceeding the Eurozone forecast.

In Germany, the vocational training landscape faces significant challenges. In North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), the number of training positions reported by the Federal Employment Agency fell by 7.8 percent compared to the previous year, reaching a historical low. Companies cite economic uncertainty as a reason for reducing investments in apprentices. Despite this decline, approximately 34,000 training positions remain vacant in the region. In Southwest Thuringia, officials are urging school leavers to secure apprenticeships or university placements immediately, noting that hundreds of positions remain unfilled in sectors such as metalworking, mechanical engineering, and energy technology.
