Austria's groundwater drops to historic lows amid spring drought

Austria experienced a severe spring drought in 2026, with rainfall deficits of nearly 50% and average temperatures about 1.4 °C above the 1991‑2020 norm. Around 80 % of groundwater monitoring sites recorded low water levels, and river flows at more than 90 % of gauge stations fell below long‑term averages. Snowpack was also well below historical levels, reducing natural recharge. The government has earmarked €126 million for water‑infrastructure projects, including new drinking‑water sources, network connections and treatment plant upgrades, and is implementing a nationwide water‑withdrawal register to safeguard supply.

In contrast, data from Germany's Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) for May and the full spring of 2026 show no evidence of a drought trend. Monthly average temperatures were 14.1 °C, within normal variability, and precipitation totals were typical for the period. The agency concluded that recent weather patterns reflect natural fluctuations rather than a climate‑driven drying, finding no measurable trend in either temperature or rainfall for the month.

Projections indicate that warm, dry conditions are likely to continue in the region over the coming weeks, with only occasional short‑term showers, leaving Austria’s water situation unrecovered in the short term.
