Austria's ORF chief appointment process mired in contentious hearings

Austria's public broadcaster ORF is selecting a new managing director after 77 applications were received and 13 candidates were shortlisted. A hearing before the supervisory board narrowed the field to nine candidates, including former APA editor Clemens Pig, former Servus TV editor Robert Altenburger and former ProSiebenSat.1 COO Markus Breitenecker. The board must now vote in a secret ballot, with each member required to provide a written justification under the new European Media Freedom Act, which demands heightened transparency.

The hearing turned confrontational when FPÖ council member Peter Westenthaler repeatedly challenged the process, reportedly shouting “Putz di” at a fellow board member. Westenthaler’s objections have delayed the vote and sparked public debate about political interference. Clemens Pig, backed by the ÖVP, remains the frontrunner despite criticisms. An anonymous email leak prompted a legal review of potential misconduct in the selection procedure.
