Austria's ORF grapples with leadership clash and cultural budget cuts

Finance Minister Karl Nehammer is set to announce cuts to Austria's cultural funding, amounting to less than one percent of the federal budget. Cultural institutions warned the reductions could force them to become mere petitioners for limited resources.

At the same time, the appointment of a new ORF director general has sparked an internal dispute. Magazine chief Lisa Totzauer and ORF III commercial director Kathrin Zierhut‑Kunz exchanged sharp criticisms over production‑cost subsidies and alleged double‑structures within the broadcaster. ORF head Ingrid Thurnher expressed irritation and rebuked both parties.

The controversy underscores a wider debate in Austria about the role of public broadcasting and state support for the arts.
