Austria's Outreach and Salzburg Festivals Spotlight Inclusive and Provocative Music

The 34th edition of the Outreach Festival, founded by Austrian‑American jazz saxophonist Franz Hackl, runs in Schwaz, Tyrol from 30 July to 16 August 2023. The programme features 30 concerts on seven stages, a main‑stage series (6‑8 August) with international acts such as British saxophonist Iain Ballamy and pianist‑composer Vadim Neselovskyi, as well as emerging German‑language groups. An Outreach Academy offers workshops for participants of all skill levels and the festival introduces a new project titled “Tu Felix Austria nube.”

At the Salzburg Festival, artistic director Markus Hinterhäuser programmed a pair of unconventional concerts that forgo a traditional conductor. Violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja staged “Les adieux,” using barefoot performance and visual projections of polluted rivers and storms to comment on environmental destruction. Camerata Salzburg performed Beethoven’s Pastoral with similar imagery, while French bass Lionel Meunier led Vox Luminis in a self‑conducted rendition of Bach’s B‑minor Mass, emphasizing a collective, vocal‑driven approach.

Both events underline a trend in Austrian festival culture toward inclusion, interdisciplinary expression, and social‑political commentary.
