Austria's probation aid budget cuts raise safety concerns

The Austrian government's austerity plan will reduce funding for the nonprofit organization Neustart, which provides probation assistance nationwide. The cut amounts to €2.4 million for the next year, creating a projected financing gap of €3.3 million, rising to €4.9 million two years later.

Neustart currently assists 12,600 clients while funding covers only about 11,500, already exceeding the legal limit of 35 clients per probation officer. Leaders Alfred Kohlberger and Johannes Pircher‑Sanou warn that further reductions will force staff cuts, increase caseloads, and jeopardise the resocialisation of especially young offenders, potentially raising recidivism and overall public safety risks. They are calling on the government to reverse the planned savings in the probation sector.
