Austria's supermarket pickles lack clear origin labeling

A consumer‑rights group, Wirtschaften am Land, examined 98 pickled cucumber products sold in Austrian supermarkets. Around two‑thirds of the items did not show the country of origin on the label. The lack of transparency was most pronounced for retailer own‑brand products, where about 80 % omitted any origin information and a quarter contained cucumbers imported from India. Only a handful of jars were clearly marked as Austrian, with the rest either vague or silent about provenance.

Because processed foods are not required to list their origin, many consumers unknowingly purchase imported pickles. Robert Pichler, chairman of Wirtschaften am Land, urged retailers to label origins more clearly, noting that “consumers expect Austrian cucumbers but often receive Indian ones without knowing.” The Austrian Farmers’ Association (OÖ Bauernbund) also called for stronger labeling standards, emphasizing the need to support domestic cucumber growers.

The investigation highlighted imports from Turkey, Poland, Germany and India, underscoring the limited visibility of supply chains in the Austrian food market.
