Austria’s food retailers fully pass VAT cut to consumers

On 1 July 2026 Austria lowered the value‑added tax on basic food items from 10 % to 4.9 %. Surveys by the Arbeiterkammer in Vienna, Styria and Tirol examined hundreds of products in major supermarket and discount chains. All surveyed retailers passed the entire tax reduction on to shoppers, and many reduced prices even further than the tax effect alone would require.

The monitoring covered 576 products across seven chains in Vienna and 343 products in five chains in Styria. Results showed price drops of up to 21.7 % for standard items, 54 % for organic goods and more than 100 % for branded products. Exceptional price differences of over 300 % were recorded for apples and over 600 % for milk chocolate.

Statistics Austria reported food‑price inflation of only 1.3 % in June 2026, compared with a 3.2 % rise in overall consumer prices. The retail sector invested roughly €6 million in updating cash‑register and inventory systems to implement the new tax rate. The Austrian government will forgo about €200 million in VAT revenue in 2026 and €400 million in 2027 as a result of the reduction.
