Austrocel warns of industry risks as wood prices surge
Rising wood and sawdust prices are placing significant financial pressure on the pulp industry. Austrocel, a pulp manufacturer based in Hallein, reports that the cost of sawdust has surged from approximately 115 to 135 euros per ton in late 2025 to over 200 euros per ton currently.
Austrocel CEO Wolfram Kalt stated that because the company sells products on international markets, it cannot easily pass these rising regional raw material costs on to customers. He warned that if Central European wood prices remain decoupled from international competitive levels, the issue could evolve from a raw material concern into a threat to the industry's regional viability.
The Austrian Wood Industry Association attributes the high prices to a weak construction sector, particularly in high-rise building, and ongoing international crises that have disrupted supply chains and increased costs.
