AusweisApp website blocked following TLS certificate revocation

The German federal AusweisApp website experienced temporary access issues on Saturday, September 26, 2026, after D-Trust, the certification authority for the Bundesdruckerei-Gruppe, revoked its TLS certificate.

As a result, web browsers such as Firefox and parts of Chrome issued security warnings or blocked access to ausweisapp.bund.de. The revocation was flagged with the status ‘privilegeWithdrawn’, which, according to CA/Browser Forum standards, indicates issues such as incorrect information or contract violations rather than a compromised private key. The latter would have been flagged as ‘keyCompromise’.

While the certificate revocation caused connectivity issues for users, the underlying online identification functionality was not reported to be generally down. The website regained accessibility on Saturday evening after a new certificate was issued.
