Author Benjamin Alire Sáenz, acclaimed writer of 'Aristotle and Dante', dies at 71
Benjamin Alire Sáenz, the Mexican‑American poet, novelist and artist renowned for his debut novel Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, died on Tuesday night at age 71 after a lengthy illness. Born on August 16, 1954 in Old Picacho, New Mexico, Sáenz became a leading voice of the U.S. borderlands, exploring identity, family and migration.
His work earned several firsts: he was the first Latino and Texan to win the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction in 2013, and in 2024 he became the first Latino writer to receive the Carnegie Medal. In the same year he co‑founded the arts collective Studio 1929. His novel Aristotle and Dante won numerous awards and was adapted into a film released in 2022.
Sáenz’s posthumous novel When the World Was Happy will be published on September 29, 2024. The book draws on a 1990 school‑shooting that claimed his niece’s life and continues his focus on difficult social subjects.
Tributes highlighted his optimism about the human spirit and his mentorship of emerging artists in the El Paso region.
