Author Gigi Leung begins North American tour for ‘Everyday Movement’

Author Gigi Leung is conducting a 12-stop North American lecture tour following the English release of her short story collection, ‘Everyday Movement’. Published globally by Riverhead, an imprint of Penguin Random House, the book explores the impact of the 2019 Hong Kong protests on individual lives, focusing on themes of fear, guilt, and identity.

Supported by Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture, the tour includes stops in Washington D.C., Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, and Toronto. Leung, who moved from Hong Kong to Taiwan in 2021, will participate in the Toronto International Festival of Authors and the American Literary Translators Association annual conference.

During a recent lecture at St. Thomas University in Houston, Leung discussed the tension between collective social movements and personal values. She noted that her work aims to preserve the emotional memories of historical shifts rather than just recording events. The collection is the first in a planned ‘Hong Kong trilogy’, with her subsequent work, ‘The Melancholy of Trees’, addressing the social changes following the implementation of the National Security Law.
