Authorities in Austria and Germany implement stricter firework bans
Local authorities in Vienna's Floridsdorf district and the German city of Bottrop are taking action to curb the misuse of pyrotechnics following increased resident complaints.
In Floridsdorf, District Chairman Georg Papai has called for a sales ban on dangerous firecrackers due to a rise in attacks and noise disturbances in residential areas like Mitterhofergasse. The local police have responded by increasing patrol frequency and deploying police dog units to search for hidden pyrotechnics in bushes. Papai has also requested increased presence from municipal housing security services.
In Bottrop, the city has implemented a tightened firework ban around the Halloween period, effective from October 24 to November 7. The measure, aimed at hotspots like Prosperpark, prohibits the possession of firecrackers within city limits and allows authorities to conduct searches based on reasonable suspicion. While the city cites risks of injury, fire, and animal distress, legal experts have raised concerns regarding the legality of such restrictive measures.
