NAFDAC seizes N5.3bn in counterfeit goods across Nigeria

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has conducted a series of operations across Nigeria, seizing and destroying counterfeit and unwholesome products valued at over N5.3 billion in a single week.

In Rivers State, NAFDAC and the Nigeria Customs Service destroyed goods worth N2.6 billion, including medicines, chemicals, tomato paste, and biscuits. In Lagos, authorities uncovered a clandestine site in Makoko producing counterfeit Nivea roll-on deodorants, leading to the arrest of two men and the seizure of various manufacturing materials.

Additional raids in Aba, Abia State, resulted in the seizure of over N700 million in fake alcoholic beverage packaging and materials. In the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex, NAFDAC confiscated N2 billion worth of suspected counterfeit alcoholic drinks and repackaged goods.

Separately, NAFDAC Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye addressed rumors regarding the death of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member in Enugu. The agency clarified that preliminary investigations indicated the death was not caused by substandard medicines, but rather followed complications from severe malaria and peptic ulcer disease.
