Authorities in Spain and Argentina address scams targeting elderly citizens
In Alicante, Spain, the National Police and the Department of Seniors have launched the ‘Plan Mayor Seguridad’ to protect elderly residents from theft, fraud, and abuse. The initiative involves conducting educational workshops across 19 senior centers to help citizens identify common tactics, such as fraudulent calls from individuals posing as bank employees or relatives in need of urgent funds.
Separately, in Las Heras, Argentina, a 57-year-old resident reported a significant financial scam. The victim was contacted via WhatsApp by an individual posing as customer service for the supermarket La Anónima. After being promised a 40% discount, the victim followed instructions to transfer 400,000 pesos to a Banco Nación account. Local authorities have opened a fraud investigation into the incident.
