Authorities intensify monitoring of atypical odors in Monterrey

Environmental authorities from the federal government and Nuevo León, alongside Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex), have agreed to intensify inspections and monitoring following reports of atypical odors in the Monterrey metropolitan area. The coordinated effort aims to identify the source of the odors and potential pollutant emissions to implement measures that improve air quality.

Technical teams recently conducted a walkthrough of the Cadereyta Refinery to review facility conditions and ongoing inspections. The Agency for Safety, Energy and Environment (ASEA) performed an inspection on August 31, the results of which are currently under evaluation. Authorities noted that no definitive conclusions have been reached regarding the origin of the odors, and the refinery has not been officially held responsible for the emissions.

The National Institute of Ecology and Climate Change (INECC), in coordination with the Nuevo León government, will continue monitoring identified areas to locate emission sources. State Secretary of Environment Raúl Lozano confirmed that a meeting with Pemex representatives is being organized to review technical data collected by the state and to establish a direct channel of dialogue to address the impact on local families.
