Authorities investigate deaths following cosmetic procedures in Angola and Brazil

Authorities in Angola and Brazil are investigating separate incidents where women died following cosmetic procedures performed in beauty salons.

In Luanda, Angola, 35-year-old Clara Luzia Garcia Lima died after undergoing a series of non-invasive abdominal fat reduction treatments involving the administration of L-Carnitine. Following the procedures, she entered a deep coma and passed away at a clinic. The Criminal Investigation Service (SIC) has detained two estheticians, Jéssica Diana Lopes Fernandes and Lídia Ndunga Pompeu, on suspicion of bodily harm resulting in death.

In Ceilândia, Brazil, a 50-year-old teacher died after suffering a severe allergic reaction to an injection intended to treat hair loss. The victim's husband reported that she experienced breathing difficulties shortly after the procedure. The Civil Police of the Federal District (PCDF) seized various substances from the salon, including hyaluronic acid and sheep placenta collagen. Investigators are looking into potential involuntary manslaughter and the illegal practice of medicine or pharmacy.
