Authorities investigate extortion and death in custody in Campeche

Authorities in Campeche, Mexico, are investigating multiple incidents involving the state's penal and judicial systems. In the San Francisco Kobén Social Reinsertion Center, officials are investigating allegations of extortion. According to Javier Herrera Valles, head of the Subsecretariat of the Penitentiary System, investigations are focused on reports that inmates or staff may be demanding money from families to guarantee the safety of incarcerated individuals.

A recent inspection at the Kobén facility resulted in the seizure of prohibited items, including machetes, metal points, suspected drugs, and mobile phones. Authorities are also monitoring changes in visitation patterns to identify potential victims of extortion.

Separately, in Ciudad del Carmen, the State Attorney General's Office is investigating the death of a man, identified as Manuel B. J., while in official custody. The approximately 60-year-old man was detained early Saturday morning in connection with alleged assault and injury charges. While family members have raised concerns regarding his death and suggested it may have been a suicide, the official cause of death has not yet been confirmed by the Prosecutor's Office.
